Meet the golfer who loves to garden

Who knew that gardening could have the therapeutic benefits of releasing stress and increasing peace of mind?

George Baloyi used to be a professional golfer back in the day and throughout his career, he was able to travel and marvel at different landscapes which gave him an idea of how a garden should look like.

Before Baloyi made it to as a professional golfer, he worked at a golf course while playing golf at amateur level where he won a few tournaments before turning pro.

He went on to turn professional in 1982 and experienced a few challenges which hindered his progress before eventually focusing solely on the game.

His renewed connection to the sport worked for Baloyi who went on to play in the South African Open at the Royal Johannesburg where he performed really well, reaching a rank of 15th.

He reached rankings of 18th and 15th in tournaments played in Port Elizabeth and Pretoria and cultivated his love for gardening which was inspired by the course designs.

Baloyi said, “I have traveled and seen many golf courses which have made me fall in love with gardening and landscaping.”

George Baloyi now keeps his garden at home well-manicured and he added, “I wouldn’t even mind making other people’s home gardens so beautiful because I have the expertise by now.”

He said that even though most people with gardens assume that it is the lawn dressing which keeps the garden green, he uses black soil to cover up the lawn when it is cold because gardens are like human beings; it gets cold when it’s cold and warm when the temperature is hot.

He gave another tip about watering the garden, he said, “People should water their gardens at least twice a week in the evenings around 8 pm when the weather is cool.

“Be aware of the mist as well which burns the grass, you can remove the mist by using water.”

After all, George Baloyi said, “I just love the garden.”
