Community Challenged Youth Empowerment (CCYE) caters for people with different disabilities such as the deaf, down syndrome, Cerebral palsy (CP), slow learners, blind people and many more.
The programme is structured as a support group and it is for people with disabilities who are living in Westbury and surrounding areas. The CCYE programme has this support group every Thursday at the Westbury Recreation Centre from 10 am to 12 pm.
The support group consists of twenty-five beneficiaries. According to co-founder of CCYE, Faeeza Davids, relatives of the beneficiaries attend these sessions as well and it helps for them to understand what their relative is going through.
“The programme really helps them. Last year some of our beneficiaries received wheelchairs and crutches from sponsors through CCYE, we also assisted many of them in receiving SASSA grants, and we tried to get a child who suffers from CP into a school and he now attends Bosmont Muslim School. We got a qualified social worker, we have Johannesburg Rehab which is assisting us with the wheelchairs and so on,” said Davids.
The City of Joburg is also involved in the programme and the group focuses on dealing with the challenges which people with disability face such as housing and jobs.
CCYE then brings in the relevant parties to discuss the issues and also educate the beneficiaries on the procedures which need to be taken. CCYE also focuses on physiotherapy and counselling.
They have different topics every week and for the past two weeks, the programmed focused on making Easter Buckets and the following week they had an Easter Egg Hunt.
“They really excited about this week, as you can hear their excitement and their different personalities coming out. It’s very nice,” said Davids during the making of the Easter Egg Baskets.
The beneficiaries were all too excited to be getting their creative juices flowing.
