All roads leading to Fuel Road are bad

The traffic lights issue at Fuel Road, between Coronationville and Westbury, soon to be addressed.

For the past year, there has been heavy vandalism which has been taking place in the Westbury and Coronationville area. If it is not the vandalising of the pedestrian bridge running across Fuel Road, then its traffic lights that are taken down and the contents which make up the traffic lights are stolen from it.

Ward Councillor Genevieve Sherman of Ward 69, met with officials from Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) to address the issues with the traffic lights which are not operating in Fuel Road, between Coronationville and Westbury.

In conversation with the councillor, she mentioned that the reason why the road agency has taken so long to fix the traffic lights is that the new parts of the traffic lights have been imported from overseas.

According to Sherman, the imported materials are the solution against the vandalism in our community. The materials are said to be ‘worthless’.

“They made with cheap material so even if thieves try to steal them, they will not get any money for them,” said Sherman. The councillor said that the traffic lights should be up and operate at the end of this month.

When asked what is been done about the roads that keep on roads of Fuel Road going all the way down into Commando Road, the councillor said that the road was rutting.

Rutting is a term used to describe the bad state of the roads, for example, there are unusual bumps and cracks in the roads.

Sherman said: “Common sense tells me that the tar is being moved by heavy-duty trucks and the Rea-Vaya buses that use the roads on a daily basis.”

According to the Councillor, the city will be sending out engineers to investigate the matter because the issue has been a reoccurring one and the rut must be a result of someone much serious.

These roads have become very dangerous especially to drivers who aren’t familiar with the area. There have been reports of damaged vehicles but as the councillor said, the matter will be investigated and eventually dealt with by the road agency.
