Is your child in primary/high school? He or she should know the following expectations

Learning environments must be kept safe at all times.

The Department of Basic Education has a Learners Section which best describes what is expected of them from the moment they enter the school environment. The section also details some expectations on behavioural matters and the rules thereof.

Through this, DBE hopes that all learning environments will be safe for the teachers, learners and community at large. Parents should familiarise themselves with the rules set-out by a school on what’s expected of their children.

According to DBE:

As a learner you are expected to:

  • accept that the main reason for being in school is to learn and develop academically, socially and culturally;
  • adhere to school rules;
  • respect the legitimacy and authority of teachers;
  • participate in Learner Representative Councils (LRCs) to safeguard your interests;
  • show respect to other learners and not to discriminate; and
  • avoid anti-social behaviour like theft, vandalism, assault, sexual harassment, alcohol and drug abuse, as well as other activities that disrupt the learning process.
