Another body taken up from the mines

Langlaagte police pledge to fight illegal mining.

Illegal miners better known as Zama Zama’s have become a major concern for residents in Riverlea. If it is not the underground explosives in which they are using to make way for themselves underground, it’s the constant gunshots fired by them for the tunnels that they protecting, theft or it’s the countless dead bodies that are found in the area.

Many residents have approached the Langlaagte Police Station in hopes that they will stop the illegal mining but unfortunately the police station is also battling with the matter.

Many Zama Zama’s are illegal immigrants who come to the city of gold to better their family’s lives but there are unfortunate incidents when events happen while they underground and death strikes.

On March 22, a body of a Zama Zama was found this in Avon Street, Riverlea. Metro police are at the scene and are stopping residents from taking photos of the body.

This is not the first time that this is happening, the last incident like this happened on October 19, last year.

We were unable to get statements from eyewitnesses, but last year’s eyewitnesses saw friends of the deceased carrying him out into the main road and they left his family’s contact details on the body.

The same thing happened with the deceased and the body also had his family members contact details on him. The body was neatly wrapped in plastic.

In the previous interview with Ward Councillor Basil Douglas, he said, “It is not the first body being found there. It is becoming untenable for Riverlea residents and also very traumatizing for children going to school.

“The area has different nationalities waging open warfare here with automatic weapons.” Smelting of gold ore is done in broad daylight and one doesn’t hear of any arrests. CRG Mines should also come to the party and take responsibility and get the army in to protect their property.”

Nothing seems to be changing for residents in the area regardless of the efforts being done to close all the mines.

Langlaagte police officers were also at the scene of the body.
