WATCH: DA members want dire action in sexual assault case at AB Xuma Primary

'We say enough is enough!'

The Democratic Alliance held a picket outside the Orlando Police station last Friday to express their grievances on the issue of the forensic investigator who allegedly assaulted two learners from AB Xuma Primary School.

DA Soweto East political head and deputy chairperson of Johannesburg region Tshepo Mhlongo said they request protection and safety of the children in schools. He said it was less than five days to celebrate human rights day yet the children’s right was violated.

He said it is uncalled for that someone who was supposed to protect the kids molested them. Mhlongo said they want to condemn such actions and they believe that the police station must be safe for people to enter.

“But now fear to enter the police station because they are not protected. We used to consider the place as a place where we seek refugee but after the incident, we can see that we are no longer safe,” said Mhlongo.

Mhlongo requested that a female officer should be the one handling the case. He allegedly said they don’t know the Batho Pele principle.

One of the members read out the memorandum that was handed to the leadership of the Police and were given 14 days to respond. These are the issues that were outlined in the memorandum: alleged abuser to be investigated and be prevented from any contact with children until the investigation is complete.

Ensuring that female officers assist female victims. SAPS officers to assist those who approach them to lay charges of abuse without ridiculing those victims. Any abuse offender to be investigated and that there be a swift action if guilt is established.

Mhongo said they call upon the justice team to make an open register of offenders that include rapists and they must make sure that all policemen must be vetted. He added that these register must be made public so that the community can know them.

He requested that the case must be dealt with speedily. Both officer Buthelezi and Mhlongo signed the memorandum. A parent who has a child at the school said she does take her child to school but fears that her child will also be a victim of this inhuman act that is wondering in the school.

Hence she has nowhere to take her child to. A concerned resident said the schools need prayers and has once had a revelation about it. She urged pastors to unite and pray for the school.
