The ratio of men to women in South Africa currently stands at 49.5 percent males to 50.5 percent females. What this means is that, for every 98 males in the country, there are 101 females.

This ratio, however, belies the fact that women in this country still suffer a number of abuses at the hands of their male counterparts. One cannot go a day without reading about another woman killed, trafficked or raped, which poses serious questions about whether we have made any inroads into addressing the imbalances between the sexes in modern-day South Africa.

Not a day goes by without reports of abuse, murder, sex-for-drugs and human trafficking making the news.

One is left wondering whether the countless initiatives introduced to protect this most vulnerable sector of our population, is nearly enough to reduce the destruction of countless female lives in our country.

All is not lost though as there are conscientious young women who are hard at work to raise awareness about the plight of women and young girls and the battles they face daily.

Tamlin Singh (25) is a young model who was struck by the hardships women endure and made a decision to shine a light on their plight by addressing some of the most serious issues women face through motivational speeches, school visits and partnering with stakeholders in communities like Eldorado Park and Ennerdale.

The aspirant model is a brand ambassador for Miss Eagle South Africa, an online pageant which she entered to use as a platform to empower young women.

The dynamic young model, who originally hails from Ennerdale, holds women empowerment close to her heart and said, “I want to empower young women from our local communities by using the ‘beauty and brains’ concept which I firmly believe, is the stepping stone to returning a sense of self worth to young girls who all-too-frequently fall prey to the lure of drug- and alcohol abuse.”

She continued, “I want to encourage them to make better choices and uplift them by letting them know that no matter what your background, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“As young women, we can strive for more and not be swayed by the trappings of the party lifestyle so many of us succumb to.”

The self-assured Singh is employed at a brokerage firm and is completing her Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act (FAIS) accreditation, so she has her head set squarely on her shoulders as she pursues a career in the financial sector.
