Melisizwe Computer Lab Project at it again [PHOTOS]

The new computer lab launched at Missourilaan Secondary School.

The main aim of the Melisizwe project is to take learners from underprivileged schools and take them into the fourth industrial revolution.

In celebration of the centenary birthday of former President Nelson Mandela and its 100 schools campaign, the Melisizwe School Computer Lab Project will be handing over a newly revamped computer lab to Missourilaan Secondary School in Eldorado Park, Extension Seven, courtesy of Sage Foundation.

The school will also become the first of the Melisizwe schools that will extend the use of the lab to offer coding, robotics and media studies to learners and unemployed youth in the area as part of its sustainability programme.

Director of the Melisizwe School Computer Project, Candice Kern-Thomas said that they are very excited to be going back to Missouri to launch the sustainability program.

“Missouri is where it all started 6 years ago,” said Kern-Thomas. “It was the first school to receive a computer lab from Melisizwe and now it will be the first school to be part of our long-term programme to bring learners into the 4th industrial revolution.”

Ambassador of the 100 schools campaign, which aims to provide computer labs to 100 schools in and around South Africa, Ndaba Mandela said that it is a great privilege for his philanthropic organisation, Africa Rising Foundation to be part of this initiative.

He believes that providing learners with skills that will prepare them for the technological age is fundamental in reducing youth unemployment.

“We are honoured to be partners in bringing learners particularly from disadvantaged communities into the mainstream of the technology space,” said Mandela.

Mandela added, “In order for us as Africans to be able to compete on a global scale, across the world, our children need to have sound knowledge on how to use technology.”

The revamped lab at Missouri is sponsored by Sage Foundation and the Melisizwe School Computer Project was selected as a winner of R460 000 in prize money.
