Skills development for the youth of Ward 68

Free life skills, End User Computer and Call Centre classes are available at the Riverlea Recreation Centre. The classes started on January 10 but EnviroParks are still looking for more students.

According to Bongie Sekatane, the project coordinator, EnviroParks is a non-profit organisation who offers skills development to residents of Ward 68.

“This course just assists the youth with computer skills and we also assist the students with job hunting. We placed a few in Discovery Health and Telkom last year but we looking for people who will also like to assist with skills training,” said Sekatane.



The only requirements for the course are that you have to be in the age group of 18 and 35 years old. If you have a Grade 10, 11, or 12, you are welcome to join the three-month-long course with EnviroParks.

The course is funded by the Department of Social Development (DSD). EnviroParks centre manager, Vida Minnaar explained that they first start with life skills training which consists of financial management, interview ethic, it is the section that prepares the youth for the working environment.

After they have completed the life skills training they will then start with End User Computer classes which consist of your Microsoft packages such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and once they completed that they will then give them the Call Centre training.



“We would like them to do all three modules of the curriculum because if they do they actually getting up to 285 credits which is a lot. We are accredited by the Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA), once we are done with the curriculum SETA officials will come and assess the students. Students receive certifications after the course,” said Minnaar.

According to the centre manager, once you are a student of EnviroParks they will provide internet access, job hunting, CV printing and they will try to assist you with job placement. Minnaar also mentioned that they are struggling to find partners for job placements but they are looking for companies who are willing to assist.

“We would like our youth to take advance of these programmes because it is accredited and free,” said Minnaar.

The classes are split into two sessions per day with twenty students in each session. Please contact the centre for further details.
