At Golden Highway, a truck carrying prisoners from court was attacked by suspects driving a silver Grey BMW.
They shot at the truck with rifles until it lost control. The driver was wounded on the leg and he has been taken to hospital for treatment.
The five prisoners charged with murder (two from Jhb Central and three from Dobsonville) escaped.
The suspects had cut the locks on the side of the truck. Suspects are still at large.
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.
