”Art is a reflection of society”

“My poems are a lot of things, it's about war, peace, relationships etc"

A poet by the name of Brian Mono from Bosmont introduces himself to the community and gives us a taste of his work. Mono has a degree in Fine Arts and Multimedia and uses his experiences in the workplace and from his environment to put it all down on paper.

Mono explained: “My poems are a lot of things, it’s about war, peace, relationships, weddings, couples fighting and then making up. I cover a variety of topics in my poems.”

Mono said that he covers a variety of subjects because its what’s happening around us. He is, however, working on something more fixed on a topic.

“I’m working on my debut book and it’s focused on one thing, its poems about celebrities. I was finished with 200 poems for the book but then my phone was destroyed and I lost all of them.”

Mono had to start all over again with his poems. His books name will be “Tribute poems to celebrities”.

When asked why he chose that name for his book, the poet said that he like immediacy, he doesn’t want people to still think about what is in his book.

“Art is a reflection of society so I try to mirror that in my work, I learnt a lot about history so that’s what allows me to write about war but when it comes to the poems about celebrities, it’s a bit complex.

I have to read and listen to the songs of the artists and then I come up with the words for the poem,” said Mono.

The 34-year old poet only writes poems of six lines, he said that a mentor taught him that and that’s what his going to stick with.

Below are two of Mono’s celebrity poems:

Tribute Poem To Bra Hugh Masekela, R.I.P
Light the world you special humming voice, Sophia.
Expect the whole when you give the drum.
My emotions has got most of Hugu’s music, I could feel.
Your song in the shallow of my belly, death has taken.
Wedding dances are routine steps.
Adulterous will be judged, you, who are you now?

Tribute Poem To Adele’s “Someone Like You”
Chronicles are messed up,
the deep things come after tomorrow shows up,
after you leave the door and things are closed up.
Imminently I’ll blow up, love comes in your tomorrows.
Insomnia comes because hurt hearts.
Easy news you get when your heart is full of juxtapositions.
Distance is messed up, sound of my grand love.

Mono also wrote a South African version of Pinocchio for the children to read. The poet would like the community to visit his new Youtube Channel and asked that you can please rate his work. If you like it click on the thumbs up or if you don’t give it a thumbs down. Mono needs these ratings in order for publishers to rate him.
