#SundayRECAP: Teamwork brings hijackers down

Cigarettes with the value of R20 000 were recovered.

A case of hijacking was opened on January 23, by the Sophiatown police after two suspects fled with a delivery truck.

According to the communications officer of the Sophiatown police, Jerbes de Bruyn, the truck was delivering cigarettes in Steytler Street, Newclare.

“The police were informed of the incident and went on searching for the suspects and vehicle. One of the suspects that drove the vehicle was arrested by members of Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD),” said de Bruyn.



The suspect managed to escape and ran away from the police.

The Sophiatown police officers also assisted and chased the other suspect. According to de Bruyn, a warning shot was fired but the suspect kept on running.


Cigarettes with the value of R20 000 were recovered.

“The police then shot the suspect in his lower left leg and managed to apprehend the suspect. The suspect was treated on the scene by paramedics and taken to Helen Joseph Hospital,” explained de Bruyn.

The vehicle and cigarettes with the value of R20 000 were recovered.
