Riverlea Extension Community Committee held a lunch for their senior citizens

A community that stands together, achieves together.

The Riverlea Extension Community Committee held a lunch for their senior citizens last month. The committee was established last year with the main focus on having a drug and crime free community. The group aims to look after the youth and help them to find employment.

According to Daphne Nokia, who is a committee member, they also look to rectify the housing problem that they currently facing and the committee plans to assist the schools with the mischief that is happening.

The committee held a senior citizen party at Wilhelmina Hoskins Primary School in the parking lot. “We as the Riverlea Extension Community Committee decided that we will also have events for our senior citizens.

“The reason is that our senior citizens kept on complaining that whenever there is an event its always in Riverlea proper. Sometimes it’s a problem for them to get transport to come over to attend the events.

“Together the team started fundraising and started getting in sponsors for the lunch. We had about 180 to 200 senior citizens attending the lunch on December 15,” said Nokia.

According to Nokia, in order for them to cater for the food they went to all the tuckshops and shebeens in Riverlea Extension, there they got sponsors for cold drinks, ice creams, some of them even donated money.

The committee received sponsors from a butcher and other residents from the community contributed by supplying tables, chairs, tents, tables clothes and amongst themselves the ladies used their own cutlery.

“We bought vegetables out of the money that was donated to us. We were able to pay for transport to collect certain things that were sponsored.

“That was out of all the money that was donated to us. It was our first but it was a success. Our seniors were very excited prior to the party and even on the day,” said Nokia.

This was just the beginning for the committee and the lunch will be an annual event for all the senior citizens of Riverlea Extension.
