Principal Mgoqi: “I want to ensure that we don’t get a pass rate less than 90%”

Tshedimosho Primary ready for the year ahead.

Principal Bongani Mgoqi of Tshedimosho Primary School is so busy he can’t even sit down for a minute in his office.

He’s up and down the school ensuring that everything is running smoothly; after all, it is the first school term of the year. New learners have arrived and it’s vital that he is on top of his game.

“The first day of school has been exciting for the simple reason that learners came early with their parents and we started on time. It’s almost 8:30 am now and everything is running smoothly so far,” he exclaimed.

Mgoqi is already ready for the year ahead and has major plans to keep improving the school, focusing mainly on improving the pass rate.

“The plan for this year is to improve our pass rate especially for Grade 3 and 6 because they are the exit classes. I want to make sure that we don’t get a pass rate less than 90% and that our learners can read and write.

“They should not only be able to read but it’s vital that they can comprehend as well; hence we will be introducing a reading class every Wednesday morning,” he said.

When asked about what strategy he implements that has been working for the school, he stated that the morning classes that happen between 7:30 am to 8:00 am as well as the afternoon and Saturday classes for learners who have challenges have been working wonders.

“It must be working because the number of learners kept increasing last year- which was surprising – and a lot of parents are proactive regarding their children’s education,” said Mgodi.

His ultimate goal for the school is to get it to the level where the learners can compete with the so-called model C schools.

“I want to produce lifelong learners. They must learn and learn and learn,” said Mgoqi.
