Mathopa: “Sometimes a long route is safer than a shortcut”

Residents warned about passages.

There seems to be no end to crime in Mapetla and residents are crying out for help as robberies continue. There are also rumours that people are getting robbed by an unknown syndicate at Mapetla Brazil Grounds.

The swindlers target people who use the passages at Mapetla High and Sedibathuto Primary School. This is where people go-through when travelling to various destinations.

One of the residents and community leader, Moalosi Mathopa is one of many people concerned about the situation. He said people also throw perishable foods, dirt and clothes at the passages.

“It is about time people stand guard at night and blow the whistle to alert law enforcement of the wrongdoings that occur in this neighbourhood.

“Maybe one or a few arrests will send a message. “Equally so, the Public Works or City Parks, whoever is responsible, should cut the grass at these passages and not at the grounds only.

“Criminals use the bushes to hide and to hide stolen goods. It would be wise to have overgrown bushes cut. It is unfortunate that our councillor may be ignorant or lacks leadership.

“He does not interact with residents to discuss issues affecting our ward. Soon, as residents, we will have one WhatsApp line for general issues, to collectively attend directly to our matters.

“We can’t fold our hands when an appointee disregards his mandate,” said Mathopa.

Another resident, Nthabiseng Modibe said she fears for her child who uses these passages when going and coming back from school.
