Did you know that illegal dumping is bad for your health?

Illegal dumping is a health hazard.

Illegal dumping has been dealt with and the burden lifted from residents after a massive cleanup, but the community is left asking, ‘How long will it take for residents to litter again?’

Even though Pikitup has been hard at work in an effort to keep communities clean, recently they went the extra mile to ensure that the environment around the Bareng Sports Grounds is healthy.

Wandisa Phendu of Pikitup was at the spot with her team to clean the dump and Radisi Transport was there to clear the hotspot dumping areas.

Phendu urged the people to be more responsible with their trash and dispose of it responsibly because illegal dumping can become a very costly exercise.

He said, “Even hiring a truck to remove the rubbish can run at exorbitant costs.”

Ben Festera of Radisi Transport was the one handling the bulldozer which scooped all the trash at the hotspots around the sports grounds of Bareng in Diepkloof, he drove the bulldozer to a number of spots including the Hospice in Diepkloof.

Festera expressed his disappointment with the people who still continue to dump illegally even after spots have been cleaned.

Festera said, “We always do try to talk to the people, but they never listen, they don’t even respect the clinic.

“Dumping hotspots are often cleaned but always revert to the same unsightly condition and the Diepkloof Square manager said that the problems caused by illegal dumping pose serious health risks to the community.

Festera said, “We may be here today to clean and restore dignity, but by next week we will encounter the same problem.”

Illegal dumping is a criminal offence which carries a penalty and people are urged to respect the environment by correctly disposing of waste materials.
