Moses Netshitangani from Progress Comprehensive bags 7 distinctions

Progress high learner crushes final exams achieves all distinctions.

Moses Netshitangani is possibly the top learner of all the local high schools in Pimville. The 17-year-old Progress Comprehensive High School’s 2017 matriculant achieved distinctions in, mathematics, Geography, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Life Orientation, English First Additional Language and Tshivenda Home Language and that is all his subjects. Well done to him.

Netshitangani said that it has always been his dream to achieve distinctions in all his subjects.

“Seven Distinctions was my goal, but when I got the call from the principal I couldn’t believe I almost bit my tongue. I knew I had distinctions but I wasn’t sure about getting all of them,” he said.

“I have been doing very well throughout the year, got seven distinctions first term, the second term I dropped to six and prelims I was back on track, got seven distinctions,” he added.

Netshitangani said that his parents are very excited and proud of him and they promised to buy him anything he wants.

“I am going to the University of Cape Town to study towards a degree in Computer Science, however, I’m in demand, the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) contacted me and offered me R15 000 if I go study with them,” he said.

“The recipe is simple, study hard and know your story, do away with cramming. After studying, you need to be able to explain to the next person if you’re failing to explain to another person what you have studied then you don’t fully understand,” said Netshitangani.

“To the 2018 Grade 12s I would like to say, your matric year is going to be short, use it wisely,” he concluded. Progress Comprehensive High School’s overall results remain the same at 74%, however, the number of Bachelor’s Degrees pass has decreased from 2016’s 51 Bachelor’s Degrees to this year’s 37.

“What I can be proud of this year, is that my maths and science group did very well, I have 14 Bachelor’s Degrees in the group. That is really encouraging to say at least we are turning the corner with regards to maths and physics,” said the school’s principal Mamaponya Makgoba.

According to the principal, this year, the school will be having more than 200 Grade 12 learners and the plan is to intensify parents’ involvement.

“If it becomes only the learner that’s only interested and the parents are not supportive and not involved the learner is more likely to fail, thus parents’ involvement is key,” said Makgoba.

“This year we want to make sure that the quality improves. We have had learners like Moses who achieve distinctions in the previous years and this year we will strive to achieve more,” she added.

Among the learners who did well from the school, there is Lucia Mudau who achieved distinctions in Tshivenda Home Language and Economics, Sam Luvhengo who achieved distinctions in Tshivenda Home Language, Civil Technology and Life Orientation and Kearabetswe Modibetsane who achieved a distinction in Tshivenda Home Language.
