Carols by candlelight gives meaning to Christmas
Children have lost the true meaning of Christmas.
Many children in the community do not understand what the true meaning of Christmas is. Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. It is a religious occasion for Christians but is celebrated by thousands of people across the globe.
Haze Watson and two other ladies started a ‘carols by candlelight’ event for the little children of the community. It was started by them to educate the children of what the true meaning of Christmas actually is. Watson said that for the past 19 years she has been hosting this event in her community.
She said, “It was started by me, Haze Watson and two other ladies who have passed away and for the past 10 years with the assistance of some of the young ladies of the hockey club we carried on with the tradition.” She continued that at this event many people discovered their talent which they did not even know they have.
She added that the event was not about singing but it is also about teaching the children that Christmas is not about receiving new clothes and presents. She said, “They need to know the real meaning of Christmas and I truly believe that a person’s childhood has an influence in your adult life. So I am committed to trying to change my community for the best. Every year when we have this event most of the young adults who were part of it in the past come and watch, in support of what is happening.”
Watson said that the children usually take part from Grade R all the way up to Grade 12. She added, “There are others who are now young adults but still take part. It may not be much for Eldos but I believe that if everyone does their bit in their community, Eldos will be a better place.” Watson made a very strong point about children being easily influenced and that if they were to start learning at a young age about the true meaning of Christmas, they would understand exactly it is celebrated. She mentioned that a lot of the children do not attend church or Sunday school and it is for that reason that they do not have the true knowledge of Christmas.
