The threat of an impending rainstorm did not dampen the spirit of the roughly 230 little ones milling about the parking lot of the SPAR in Extension Two on December 19.
The committee was out in force to ensure that their fledgling feeding scheme filled the little tummies.
They played a few games like well-known favourite ‘Tamatie sauce’ to get the children into the festive mood.
While Santa fills many stockings during this season, many households go without and organisations like these-who rely solely on sponsorships and donations-reach out by ploughing back into the community.
According to founding member and Ward 18 committee member for public safety, Ingrid Harris, “The committee was founded six months ago on the principle of safety after certain threats to our children’s safety spilled over into the community.
“This is when we as residents decided to give back by investing in our children.”
She continued, “The future of Eldos can learn from our example.
“They, in turn, can continue the culture of ploughing back into the community.”
Secretary Moeniera Daniels said that the feeding scheme was started almost three months ago on the same day that the area was rocked by the murder of four year old Shaynice Talla and feeds upwards of 150 children in the parking lot on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 pm with donations received from SPAR, Gito’s Sweets and KC’s catering who donated the jumping castles.
So, let’s remember to take a pause as we tuck into our Christmas lunches and remember those whose stockings have not been filled and for whom the constant rumble of hunger is a constant reminder that we live in a world in which a few Rands separate us from our neighbour.
