Diepkloof Karate whiz kid off to nationals

Young Karate champion shows what can be achieved with hard work and a teacher who believes in you.

Tshepang Lechaba has become a role model for other young people in the community through his dedication to the sport of Karate.

The sport is often just thought of as one of aggression but nothing could be further from the truth, it actually encourages discipline, restraint, self awareness and noble values.
Lechaba is a member of the Diepkloof Dynamite Karate Team (DDKT) run by Sensei Thabo Molubi.

The team is ending their 2017 on a high note. This past Saturday they headed to the Gauteng Provincial Karate Championships in Bez Valley.
Besides the competition, the event was also where the team that will represent the province at the Karate South Africa Nationals early next year was selected.

“My senior athlete, Tshepang took part in these championships and walked away victorious.

“He took part in the U21 male kumite division, Seniors U67 Kilograms Division and won silver medals in both,” said Molubi.

Sensei Molubi explained that this was a really tough tournament as all the karatekas from five regions of Gauteng; Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng Johannesburg and West Rand came together to compete for a spot on the national team.

“Tshepang has proved himself to be one of the best elite karatekas in Gauteng, which is why he qualified for the nationals.

“It takes years of practice before one can be on the same level as Tshepang and the boy has been training very hard for years and finally there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.
“There’s definitely a bright future for this youngster and I am hoping that more children follow in his footsteps.

“He is a role model for our club’s kids and I am sure he is also making an impact to some in the community.”

His sister Mmasechaba Lechaba and Lehlogonlo Kekana and Bokhutlo Ramatladi will be attending their junior provincial championships early next year. Molubi said, “I am confident that they will do us proud.”
