McBain Charles Primary School, in Extension Nine, received a blessing from Andrew Lindsay in the form of a mosaic piece.
The artwork is positioned at the entrance of the school for everyone to see.
“We have done quite a number of projects with school children across Gauteng. We have been working with Bronwyn over the last four years with their school support programme and did about 20 schools with them on some we worked with the children and others we made ourselves,” said Lindsay.
He continued, “I have worked in communities since the eighties making murals with educational messages about AIDS, land and women’s rights.We also worked a lot in the trade union movement.

“For the last 20 years, we have done quite a number of public art projects around the city and will be happy to take you around and give you an idea, including the MK monument in Kliptown.”
The idea of working with the kids or with the community is that a lot of the schools in the community don’t have art as a subject, so these are ways to expose them to an art-making process and at the same time teach them skills and develop a sense of pride and ownership.
“I will never forget a workshop we did at a primary school a number of years ago when one little boy approached me afterwards and asked if he could have a cutter and some tiles as he wanted to make something at home,” he said.
These little interventions can’t be underestimated as they will prepare the youngsters for something they could do later. Their entrepreneurial skills and the knowledge will prepare them to change the environment.
