Drawing a fresh coat of paint into life

How did schools enter the competition?

Its all about pens down for learners as December is in our midst with exam results and the like, but Soweto schools have a little more to celebrate after winners of the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition were announced at the Cashbuild Protea Gardens Store Opening Ceremony recently.

Eight schools were awarded building material voucher to the value of R15 000 each from the store.

According to principals their main concerns with the school properties were new paving, fresh coats of paints and repairing/maintenance of school grounds.

Mveledzandivho Primary School principal Takalani Siminya said, “We would like to do maintenance work around the school by paving bricks that will make our school look neat and tidy and will be safer for the learners to play on.”

The store hosted the Art-at-Heart competition which needed learners from each school submitting their best artwork to them.

After much deliberation from judges, each school had three winners that would be placed first, second and third respectively. The winning learners were awarded gold, silver and bronze certificates while the schools with the cheque.

The store announced that all the winning artwork would be displayed in the new shop for the next six years for all to see the creativity of the learners.

There was one category that went to one learner out of the all schools called the Manager’s Choice award which was given to Ernest Mukwevho from Putalushaka Primary School.

Mukwevho won a stationery pack and a glass trophy and had the honour of officially opening the store. Elsie Mahada Putalushaka Primary School’s principal said: “We are very excited and proud of and for our leaners for winning this competition.”

Cultural dance, theatre performances and song filled the opening ceremony with cheers from learners expressing their happiness because of their shared wins. R120 000 was the total amount given for building material that was presented on that day.
