#SundayRECAP: ‘Let us work towards a crime free community’

In any community, crime has a negative impact on the lives of those affected by it.

Crimes like murder, attempted murder, theft of motor vehicles and domestic violence are on the increase, which is a worrying sign in any community.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) Hlanganani Constituency felt that something needed to be done to deal an effective blow to crime in the community.

They took to the very streets where these crimes occur and staged a march in protest of the spiking crime rate. On Saturday, November 11, the DA Hlanganani Constituency marched with residents against the high crime rate in Eldorado Park.

Ward 18 councillor, Fazel Jaffer said, “The march was about crime awareness, and how we as communities should get involved in the fight against drugs and crime by starting street committees and joining Community Policing Forum (CPF) structures.”

The DA took to the streets, having decided that, ‘enough is enough’ as they believe that more needs to be done to tackle the high crime rate in the area.

Eldorado Park residents were joined by the DA Gauteng provincial leader John Moodey, DA constituency head Makashule Gana and all the DA councillors and activists in the constituency.

This DA-led march was a stance against crime, “We are saying that crime has no place in our community, and we are sending a stern message to criminals that we will not allow them to turn our community into a crime hub,” said Jaffer.

According to the DA, it is unfortunate that the South African Police Service (SAPS) falls under the national jurisdiction. It is for this reason that they are calling on the national government to improve their policing capacity.

With a mission to making the community a safe haven, Jaffer assured residents that they would continue to strive for a better Johannesburg, which is safe and crime-free.

That will not be a very easy mission to accomplish, but it is definitely something to work towards.

Furthermore, “Residents are urged to report criminal activity to JMPD on 011 375 5911. The City’s Johannesburg Metro Police Department, now administered by the DA-led coalition government, strives to support residents and promote a safe environment for all,” concluded Jaffer.
