Gunshots end taxi driver’s life

A taxi driver believed to be in his 30's was shot dead inside his taxi.

South Africans from all walks of life rely on taxis to ferry them from home to work and vice versa. In many townships across the country, taxis are the preferred mode of travel.

In recent years, taxi drivers have come under fire for what many see as reckless driving which endangers their fares and other road users.

Many road rage incidents can be attributed to negligent driving and a few examples are; impatient drivers who drive in the emergency lane when traffic is backed up, turning in a no-turning lane and dangerous overtaking of other vehicles.

Not all taxi drivers are guilty of these infractions and the ones who are, place more than their own lives at risk when engaging in these behaviours.

Although there are many accusations and negative stereotypes directed at the drivers, we need them, and at the end of the day, they are only working beings.

When it comes to the roadworthiness and the safety of the vehicles, that is another matter altogether, but what any commuter fears and dreads witnessing is the murder of the driver transporting them.

This unfortunate incident happened to passengers in Florida on November 15. The horrific incident occurred the Gordon and Hendrik Potgieter Road intersection. A taxi driver believed to be in his 30’s was shot dead inside his taxi.

“ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene at 4.45 pm to find the body of the taxi driver lying on the side of the road, a short distance away from his vehicle. The passengers who were seated in the vehicle at the time of the incident were seated on the pavement,” said ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring.

The paramedics assessed the man and found that he had sustained several gunshot wounds which left him in a critical condition.

According to Meiring, the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and advanced life support interventions were immediately initiated in an effort to revive the patient.

Unfortunately, after some time, no vital signs returned and the man was declared dead at the scene. Fortunately, none of the passengers were injured in this incident.

“The exact cause of the incident is not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations,” said Meiring.
