Chiawelo youth embark on helping the underprivileged

The SSI team are determined to address poverty in their community.

Formed in August last year, the Schools and Social Intervention Project, situated at Gazankulu Primary School is doing a great job in helping the needy in their community and neighbouring schools.

They distribute food and material and do referrals for people who not have Identification documents. They also help school children with their after-school lessons.

One of the programmes member, Tshepiso Matala, who is the project manager said they also deal with orphans and the vulnerable children in the society who do not have parents or those who have single parents but cannot afford.

“We give them food for the needy and our main point is that we as the youth found it sad to live in the community where people are suffering but no one is doing something about it.

“As Chiawelo youth we decided to act upon it. “It sad to see a school child without shoes while getting the social grant and that affected us a lot that is why we started to implement this project and include the community and schools around Chiawelo,” said Matolo.

She said so far they are a small group teenagers in the project. “As we grow we will target other areas including Phiri, Mapetla, and Seanaoane.

“So far we deal with Chiawelo schools and we visit them as often as we can,” said Matolo. She said they have no sponsors and they survive by doing donations and fundraisings.

“We can be very much happy to get assistance. “As Christmas is approaching would be able to provide clothes for the children who have no parents and make them be accommodated and put a smile on their faces.

The group has nine active members so far. Matolo said the community is also playing a big part in supporting the project.

“When we ask for their children to do fundraisings they respond positively and we appreciate the support,” she said.
