A chess match requires fast thinking and problem-solving.
The Goldreef City School’s Open took Pimville by surprise and saw the Knight Riders Chess Club (KRCC) of Diepkloof checkmate most of their opponents.
KRCC coach Linda Makhubela said, “The juniors can compete and play and have had the privilege to compete with chess players from all over the country.”
In the U9, Division Nosipho Chauke of the local club prevailed and won the number one spot when she won all of her five games hands down.
Chauke was preceded by Noluthando Ntshalintshali who came at number two after she only lost one game from her five games.

Nobuhle Mkhasibe may not have performed as she would’ve desired in the previous tournament she took part in, but this time around, the 6-year-old chess player managed to checkmate three opponents to come out on the third position.
The U11 Division must have been intense as the pensive Kgothatso Moloi and Mhlakaza Oko got the second position after losing only one game out of their five games.
Sandile Ngcobo was moving like the grand master when he won all his five games, taking the first spot, while the U11 girls Division saw Ntombibaba Mbhele and Lungile Mnguni both tie for the number one spot.
Mbhele and Mnguni both won four games out of their designated games for the day.

The tournaments are a momentum builder for the club which will be taking part in the chess national tournament in December; the club has earned a spot at the nationals after the players competed in four different tournaments.
He said he started the club to keep the juniors occupied and help them improve their school work because chess elevates concentration and strategies.
Jacob Mogoai accompanies his grandchildren to the club where they get to sharpen their focus by sparing with the other players, he said, “Chess is good as it increases the capacity of thinking and it is a good mentor for mathematics, memory and concentration.”
Ntokozo Mpanza and Khanyisile Zulu both came out 2nd for the U11 girl’s division.
Lerato wasn’t leaving any prisoners in the U13 division as she dominated and won all her games, earning the number one spot, She was followed by Gino Valoi and Khensani Nyembe on position two and three, respectively.
The coach admitted that the experience of traveling with the club has been a very enlightening one.
The club is in need of sponsorship to help them maintain the club and ensure that the kids always get to the tournaments and return safely and on time.
