Workshop to avoid child mortality
Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital hosts a Champ Workshop.
Respiratory and Managerial Pathogens Research Unit (RMPRU) based at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital hosted a Champ workshop (Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance) programme in Dorothy Nyembe Park in Dobsonville.
RMPRU reported that they en-devour to better understand the causes of child mortality in order to reduce preventable death in future.
Their CHAMP programme will track the causes of under under-5 mortality and stillbirths in different parts of the world including South Africa, Mozambique, Kenya, Ethiopia, Mali and Bangladesh, by using a technique called Minimally Invasive Tissue Sampling (MITS).

They invited stakeholder in health, children and various sectors of the community who are concern about the escalating child mortality within the community.
Ward 47 head of Health Poloko Nkwe cited that the workshop revealed that other causes leading to child motility include, drugs, alcohol, poverty and negligence.
“We need to educate the public about such factors, especially the pregnant women. We are grateful for the partnership we have established together with CHAMP within Ward 47,” said Nkwe.

Carol Kodisa Ward 47 head of Community Development Two (dealing with children) cited that they were not aware that children under 5 were dying at a large scale.
“This workshop was informative and the knowledge gained today will help to empower mothers and the community.
“One death is too many, we will be working together with the local day care centres and local non-governmental organisations to create an awareness.
“We urge pregnant mothers to speak out especially when they have challenges during their pregnancy period. We are available and ready to intervene,” concluded Kodisa.
