Holey hazard in Kelvin Street

Poor road condition in Kelvin Street.

The Westside Urban News reporter was in Kelvin Street on October 18 and found a huge sinkhole in the road. Pedestrians who walk along the street on a daily basis seem to trust the edges of the sinkhole as they walk really close to it.

The hole is also a huge danger to motorists, especially those who are not familiar with the area. This could cause serious damage to someone’s car and even cost someone their life.

A taxi which was transporting schoolchildren sped along the road and when the driver reached the sinkhole, he did not even slow down at all.

The hole is filled with litter.

Instead, he just continued speed past while the children stuck their heads out of the window to see what was in the hole. The hole is filled with nothing more than litter and when it rains the rainwater collects there as Kelvin street is a downhill.

Another possible danger is that the rain could cause a deep pond in the hole and someone could drown.

This sinkhole was brought to our attention by ward councillor Basil Douglas who said that he sent a text message to the regional director which read, “Regional director, I really need your urgent intervention outside Anthea hostel.

Passing cars giving it a wide berth.

“This hole has been there for nine months and despite many reporting and reference numbers this is a death trap and even businesses can’t access their premises.

“Johannesburg Road Agency is not assisting here in Kelvin street, Industria.”

As it stands, there are many constructions in and around the street but for some reason, the sinkhole is not being taken note of.
