Bringing smiles on destitute learners

Helping learners get ready for matric farewell.

Ward 47 councillor Tebogo Mhlari, Gorata Foundation and local stakeholders embarked on a mission to collect clothes for matriculants to use for their farewell celebrations.

Councillor Mhlari said Grade 12 learners from the destitute background suffer low self-esteem because they do not have clothes to wear to their matric dance celebrations.

As a result, they felt shunned and looked down by other which perpetuate a low self-esteem to most of them.



Some of these learners opt not to celebrate such occasion, forgetting that it might be a once in a lifetime event in their lives.

“It is because of such hush realities that we decided to partner with local businesses, Gorata Foundation and willing ward 47 residents to make matric dance of schools in our ward a memorable event.

“We earmarked destitute learners from three high schools in my ward namely, George Khoza, Forte and PJ Simelani.

“Clothes collected from both the companies and residents will be handed to identified learners,” said councillor Mhlari.



She said items they are collecting range from clothes formal and semi-formal, shoes, accessories both new or second hand.

They are also working with local hair salons tasked with the responsibility of hair styling and make up for the earmarked learners.

“There are 15 identified learners from George Khoza who have already benefited from this initiative because the event they already hosted.



“Learners from the other two high schools will definitely benefit when they host their event. This initiative will benefit both boys and girls,” said councillor Mhlari.
