Get medical treatment on your doorstep

"Patients must start creating a problem list so that I am able to see where I can help."

“Patients have a right to get help when they visit clinics and have a right to report if they don’t receive the much-needed assistance,” said Chiawelo Community Practice leader, Dr Shabir Moosa.

He spoke these words at a community meeting held at the Chiawelo Community Centre on October 18.

Ward 12 residents were up in arms about the poor service they receive at the Chiawelo Health Centre.

Claims were made that the clinic employees ignore patients and walk around while patients are sitting in long queues for long periods of time.

Kenneth Baloyi, a resident at the meeting, said that he was at the clinic to collect his medication and was told that there was no medication at the centre.

Moosa said that was unacceptable and that patients should be treated in a fair manner, in keeping with the ‘Batho Pele’ (people first) principles which should be practised by all staff.

This was after he taught the assembled residents how to treat chronic diseases such as TB and HIV/Aids.

“Patients must start creating a problem list so that I am able to see where I can help and identify those who need to conduct HIV tests and that we can even have the test done at your house, thus eliminating the need for patients having to wait in the endless queues.”

“In that way, we can solve at least 70 percent of the problems patients encounter when seeking help,” said Moosa.

He said that the TB testing was very important when someone is plagued with a wracking coughing. He said that CCP was working extensive efforts to visit the community by making door-to-door visits.

“In ward 12, out of the 22 000 we counted, there were only 7 000 people who I followed up with, so if we can compile a list which will be stored in our database, it would be much easier to follow up on everyone.”

Residents had a chance to raise their concerns and Moosa said that CCP would collate the grievance raised and ensure that concerted efforts are made to resolve these issues.
