Rahima Moosa Hospital rocked by nursing staff shortage

Rahima Moosa Hospital in Coronationville, West of Johannesburg has been left disadvantaged by the withdrawal of their agency nursing staff.

Available staff members have been left to work in the absence of their much-needed co-workers.

“This is yet another ill-effect of the Gauteng Health Department‘s financial mismanagement,” said DA Gauteng Shadow Health MEC, Jack Bloom.

The nursing agency responsible for the withdrawal of nursing staff was not paid.

The busy maternity hospital delivers about 14 000 babies a year but was only able to use one of the hospital’s two emergency operating theatres, due to the short-handed staff.

This poses a potential health risk for pregnant patients if the need for emergency caesarean operations increases.

“The financial woes of the department have led to telephone cuts, machines not repaired and now a hospital trying to ensure safe births without enough nurses,” said Bloom.
