Sowetens read to lead

The Gauteng Department of Education launched a Read to Lead Campaign at Pace Commercial Secondary School last Thursday.

Aimed at becoming a custom at every local school, the campaign seeks to promote the culture of reading across schools in Soweto.

The campaign works by bringing literature focused a such as Room to Read and Nali Bali on board to facilitate objectives of the campaign along with performing functions of those organisations.

The main dignitary said, “To launch the campaign, was Gauteng Department of Education, MEC Panyaza Lesufi, along with other dignitaries from the education sector.

“The aim of this campaign is to improve the reading abilities of all learners and ensure that learners are able to demonstrate age-appropriate levels of reading.

“This is in light of a research done in previous years, which revealed that South African children are unable to execute tasks that demonstrate key skills associated with literacy,” said Steve Mabona, spokesperson from the department of education.
