Ukhamba competition grooms promising learners

The second annual Ukhamba Greening Schools competition got the learners feeling elated and promising to be brighter in future.

The competition was at the phase of the school’s award ceremony for all the schools that participated in the competition that challenged them to either create art from waste, conserve the state of the environment in their schools and basically keep their schools green.

The organiser of the annual competition from Ukhamba, Mzwakhe Nhlapo explained that they were merely celebrating the learners and honouring them for their co-operation and taking part in the competition.

Schools took part in four different categories which were Art of waste, the state of the environment in their school, the state of the province’s environment, and presented the green school.

Nhlapo said, “We wanted to encourage the schools to go green, since the inception of the competition last year we have seen that some pre-schools have started creating food gardens in their schools, and landscape and water conservation and have even started saving energy.

Nhlapo gave thanks to all the stakeholders that made the competition a possibility like the Department of Agriculture, the City of Johannesburg and the Johannesburg Zoo.

We are not planning to stop this competition that we are planning to hold for years coming.

The learners who willingly took part in the challenge were thrilled at the results of their labour like Yolanda Molebatsi who came out the third position for green school category.

Molebatsi said, “I have learned a lot from the competition.”
