For a very long time, the grounds in Extension Two have been neglected.

Members of the Little Eagle Football Club (LEFC) took it upon themselves to do something about the forgotten field and decided that nine of them would clean it up. The clean-up project started in May.

The eldest of the nine members at LEFC, Gabriel Jacobs (64) said, “We wanted to clean only a portion of the grounds but decided later to tackle the whole grounds.”

Jacobs added, “The main purpose of the clean-up is because there is no training facility for our soccer teams, so we cater for girls and boys from U8 to U16, to keep them off the streets and away from drugs, crime and other social ills. Hopefully, in the future, we will be able to cater for an open team.”

Their plan is to revamp the grounds and create fields for soccer training and eventually an indoor soccer facility. With LEFC’s plans, they have sparked another individual’s idea to give back.

Moeniera Daniels said, “The grounds have been dirty for many years. Two years ago they used to strip cars in the field. I remember waking up and seeing the shells remaining in the field.

“Then I saw the potential of the guys (LEFC) and decided to team up with them.”

They have formed a sector two block committee with the purpose of working with the Community Policing Forum and the South African Police Service to bring change to the sector.

Daniels is planning a family fun day on October 28 to raise funds to compensate the nine guys as a token of appreciation for the work that they have done and also to start revamping the grounds.

Daniels said, “Basically we need to take the first step to make changes in our community, one step at a time.”

She also started a feeding scheme on September 27, where they fed 110 children on the first day, a clear indication that there is a change, 110 children did not go to bed hungry.

Jacobs said, “We need to acknowledge Moeniera Daniels, Sandra McCauley and councillor Fazel Jaffer for being there for us and supporting us in our effort.”
