Moruta-Thuto Primary celebrated its 60th anniversary

Moruta-Thutho 60 years strong

Moruta-Thuto Primary School recently celebrated its 60th anniversary. The celebration was a huge milestone not only for the schools but for the community of Meadowlands who were forcefully removed from Sophiatown to Meadowlands in 1955.

“The celebration tells you about the history of Meadowlands and Sophiatown. The first learners were the ones who were forcefully removed from Sophiatown to Meadowlands.

“The school has produced has produced many legends such as Marks Maponyane. Let us celebrate the school as it is one of the kinds,” said Ward 43 councillor Happyboy Molobye who also happens to be one of the products of the school.

Event Coordinator Botlale Modisane said that the school’s officials need to celebrate its anniversary as it is a milestone.

The schools current principal Tshidi Mashile welcomed the guests and gave a brief history of the school.

“The school started operating in 1957 August. Because of heritage month, we decided to celebrate its anniversary together with heritage day.

“The school has grown over the years with over 600 learners currently. I would love to applaud the school teachers for transforming many learners.

“The school ensures that every learner receives the quality education and the educators must focus on the child and we will continue to instil professionalism,” said Mashile.

Some guests that attended the celebration.

Radio DJ colin Hans who also attended his primary education at Moruta-Thuto motivated the guest about the current state of the South African education.

“For us to get our education right is to fix the system,” he said.

Former teacher Pat Sepeng spoke profoundly about Moruta-Thuto.

“When I started teaching at this school I was 20 years old.”

She said she looked at several names such as Totomeng and Nkwe, names that were not speaking to me.

Colin Hansi motivating the guest about the current quality of education in South Africa.

“When I came across Moruta-Thuto I knew that this was the place for me. The name’s a challenge when you apply as it tells you that you are here to work,” she said.

The first principal of the school and other principal graced the event to celebrate the milestone.

The learners of the school entertained the guests with music, dance and poetry.

It was a beautiful celebration which showcased the quality of education the school has produced over the years.
