Mars global pet companies to host “First ever Soweto Dog Show” with the goal to educate the community about responsible pet ownership and pet nutrition.

Mars Petcare, known for brands such as Pedigree® & Whiskas® along with its sister company, Royal Canin have partnered with the Soweto Animal Rescue and Advisory Centre (SARAC), Takealot.com and Paws petshop in Soweto to host an outreach program in celebration of World Animal Day.

The pet-loving community of Soweto is invited to attend this community outreach program planned to take place on the 7th, October 2017 at Mofolo Park, Soweto.

The goal of the Soweto Dog Show is to engage with pet owners and talk about nutrition and how to care for your pet. Vets will be on site at the event to perform free health screenings, vaccinations and dog dipping for all dogs that come to the event.

Mars and Royal Canin hope to vaccinate at least 200 dogs through the course of the day. Pet owners can expect a fun-filled day including SAPS police dog unit demonstration, a dog breed show and lots more.

In addition to the Soweto Dog Show, Mars has partnered with Takealot.com with the aim to donate 10 000 bags of Pedigree® or Whiskas® pet food to the value of R2 million, between 25th September to the 7th, October 2017. For every bag of food sold on the Takealot.com platform, Mars will donate the same value and all proceeds will go to SARAC.

“Mars and Royal Canin are committed to educating South Africans about the importance of proper pet nutrition and responsible pet ownership,” said Tumi Masekela, Corporate Affairs Director, Sub-Saharan Africa.

“World Animal Day gives us the perfect opportunity to partner with amazing groups like SARAC, and give pet owners the motivation to feed their pets with high-quality pet food and keep their pets healthy and happy.”

Royal Canin Marketing Manager, Tarryn Day, adds “Soweto pet owners will be happy to know that the first pet shop in Soweto has just opened. We are thrilled to have helped in establishing, Paws Petshop in Mofolo in conjunction with our sister company.

This is a first for Sowetan residents and one that we hope will grow further to ensure that cats and dogs receive the right nutrition and have a choice of foods to suit their pet’s age, breed and lifestyle.” Visit the store at 1086, Kunene Str, Rockville.

World Animal Day is celebrated every year on the 4th of October. The holiday began in 1931 to highlight the plight of endangered animals and has since evolved into a day to honour all the animals of the world.

“Pets offer so much more than companionship. Studies have shown that pets have positive effects on the health of their owners, and especially among the elderly and young children.

“Pets also enhance early childhood development and have even been shown to improve the behaviour of children with autism,” says Masekela, “We want to educate all pet owners that taking care of the health of your pet is essential and that a healthy pet means a healthy life for yourself as well.”

The Soweto Dog Show will take play on Saturday, 7 October at Mofolo Park in Soweto starting at 10 am.

Adults will be charged a R10 entrance fee, kids are free. All proceeds will be donated to SARAC.
