100 years and counting for Gogo Mbongwa

... and counting.

The Methodist Church of Southern Africa Zola Circuit hosted a 100-year birthday celebration for gogo Virginia Mbongo in Zola 3.

Being a delayed celebration, gogo Mbongo actually celebrated her birthday earlier this year, but the Sunday Manyano from the church decided to surprise her.

Living in the presence of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Mbongo has lived a long and fruitful life under the church she has been part of for all her life.

With only 3 of her 7 children left, gogo had a rather emotional day at her celebration, making reference to the loved ones she has lost.

“I have lost many loved ones in my life and it pains me to think that I’ve lost my husband and my children and I’m only left with three children.

“So I’ve found refuge and strength in Christ. I am old and frail but I still love the world, hence I still go to church to date, because I believe in the power of God,” said gogo Mbongo.

Her great-grandchildren adore being around her, saying that her character never grows old and is always fun to be around.

“Gogo is a very sweet person but she is also a strict person and sometimes gets fussy.

“The one thing I love about her is that even when she is fussy, she has a sense of humour about her fussiness, so at the end of the day, she really becomes a fun person to be around,” said Sibongile Mbongo, Gogo’s great-granddaughter.
