Fernando Zaunde, the man who saw a gap

"I came, I sewed and I'll conquer"

Fernando Filipe Zaunde who is originally from Mozambique has been sewing from 2002.

The 55-year-old said he started sewing because he wanted to feed his family and the fact that he didn’t want to wait for the government while having hands he can use to make a living.

“We must not wait for the government to give us jobs. As long as one has hands and brains, one must utilise to make a living,” says Zaunde.

With the country facing a lot of challenges in the employment sector it is important for people to use what they have and must stop waiting for the government as it can’t provide for everyone. The government can’t cater for everyone according to Zaunde.

There are a lot of opportunities for the unemployed people especially within the community, it’s about using what God gave you to create job opportunities for you and make a living.

“I’m always busy here, a lot of people bring their toned clothes to be sewed, to be trimmed to fit them well and I provide all that here.”

“I saw a gap and started sewing as I saw that I didn’t have a good job at the manufacturing industry and It motivated me to open a sewing business in order to make a living and support my family too.

“I came to South Africa searching for greener pastures and looking for a better living and surely I didn’t want anyone to give me a job but use my hands and brains to make a living.”

“Lastly the only thing I can say to the people out there is that never wait for the government or a job opportunity to come to you, make one for yourself and the fact that you can walk, use your brains and hands to make a living because the government doesn’t have the power to provide for all,” he says.
