Maths whizzes scoop gold at ABACUS

"We are very happy with the school because we are working on specialising in maths and we need to improve our results"

Six out of the ten learners got gold trophies, four got gold medals and only one student came back with a silver medal on Saturday, September 2.

The principal of the school Nomasonto Luvuno said mathematics is a challenge in the whole country. They tried ABACUS last year and they have reaped good results.

“We are very happy with the school because we are working on specialising in maths and we need to improve our results. Running the school and ensuring that you produce good results is difficult,” said Luvuno.

Children who managed to get above 96 percent were given big gold trophies, 80-70 got medium medals and those who got above sixty also got medals.

Owners of Abacus in South of Johannesburg franchise Palesa Kgoadi and Gibsy Diale started their franchise with only 30 learners and they have now grown to 100 learners.

They said they were only teaching in the suburb before but they saw that they were doing injustice to the children who are living in the location.

The programme was introduced through a support group called Phuthanong Youth trust in Jabavu.

“Through word of mouth we were introduced to the principal of the school and she allowed us to do the presentation. We started this year and 10 kids managed to qualify for district level,” said Kgoadi and Diale.

“Kgoadi said the child qualifying for regionals is quite an achievement and we can make an impact in the school.

“A big thank you to the principal who has the best interest of learners at heart. These learners are confident and can tackle any mathematical question their age with ease,” she said.

Ayanda Ntsibande, Sihle Luvuno, Nonhlanhla Ntongo, Khutathala Lukhozi, Siyamthanda Khumbane and Kyle Nkosi the six grade 3 learners going to the district level.
