Live beyond your disability

Disabled people are human too

The Woman of Africa In Prayer hosted an Open Day for the centre for paraplegics recently at the Protea Glen Library hall recently.

The purpose was just for disability non-governmental organisations to share with the disabled and able-bodied residents the many functions and programmes they offer for disabled people in communities.

Monica Nebulane the centre manager of WAIP and organiser spoke about her struggles grappling with her disability as she was diagnosed with polio at the age of 16.

“We want to have a centre stimulation centre in Protea Glen for persons with disabilities that will have a computer lab and will double up as a skills centre etc,” says Nebulane.

Disability non-government organisations such as Independent Living and Tokologo Self Help Centre among others, were under one roof each to talk about the kinds of programmes they offer to disabled people in the community.

Nebulane shared worship songs and gave a motivational talk for the residents that attended to make them aware that being disabled should not change who the person is.

“Just because you are disabled doesn’t mean you can’t marry an able-bodied person.

“Don’t live your life as though the world owes you something, nobody owes you anything. You must live your life fully with no regrets, you mustn’t be ignorant to the world.”

Nebulane thanked all attendees for making it to the open day, and able-bodied residents seemed to be receptive of her speech.

“We are a blessed family, that’s the grace of God, you may never know what makes that home to be a such a home,” says Nebulane.
