ICON gives back to the community

Reflector jackets donated to help aid the community

With the recent tragic deaths of black youths, robberies and rape cases, a group of residents in Pimville ward 22, decided to volunteer as patrollers for the safety of the community.

However, they did not have equipment and uniform needed to do an effective job. So they approached the Ward 22 councilor, Lizzy Mabaso to assist them where feasible.

These residents committed themselves to notify the police of trouble spots, identify dangerous corners where illegal drugs are regularly sold, teenage gang hideouts and other criminal activities so that the police can move in and put criminal activities at bay.

“This is the partnership between the SAPS and the community, two entities with a single aim which is to get rid of crime. I fully support their initiative to fight for a safe community and when they approached me for assistance, I treated it as an emergency, responded to it as soon as I could,” said Mabaso.

“I then requested for donations from different organizations and fortunately Club ICON was very quick to respond. They donated funds to buy reflector jackets for the patrollers,” she added.

The reflector jackets were handed over to the patrollers on Friday, September 1, by Mabaso and Club ICON Manager, Tumelo Moitoi.

“Knowing that positively contributed to the community by ensuring that the community that we are based in is safe makes me proud. We are part of this community and this brings joy to the entire ICON Soweto team,” said Moitoi.
