Dobsonville Joshco project resume

Construction of the flats underway in Dobsonville

Dobsonville social housing, having been introduced by the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO), has finally been resumed after a long delay.

According to JOSHCO management, the site was handed over to the contractor Murray and Dickson on April 20 and construction work commenced on May 16.

JOSHCO’s Anthony Ngcezula said before the restart of building process all parties involved agreed that there will be no more strikes that would hinder the construction process.

“Agreement was reached prior to the construction commencement and JOSHCO had a number of public engagements with the community.

“They further had separate meetings with different groups, individuals, Small Micro Medium Enterprises (SMME’s), Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), skilled and semi-skilled workers to discuss the challenges they faced previously.

“All the parties involved were content with the solutions and mitigation strategies was put in place to avoid any conflict on site,” explained Ngcezula.

He said the construction of the Dobsonville JOSHCO flats will be completed on November 26 next year and people will start moving into the flats as from January 2019.

Ngcezula said they are building a total of 502 units, 152 one bedrooms, and 350 two bedrooms unit.

The flats will consist of two bedrooms, kitchen, dining room and bathroom.

The other alternative flats are bachelor which consist of one bedroom, open plan kitchen, dining room and bathroom.

Aspiring home owner Tshidiso Lebelo said, “I’m looking forward to renting a flat in this precinct.
“The strike nearly derailed my plans to rent an apartment in Dobsonville not far away from my parents’ house.

“We hope this time around, all parties involved will put their differences aside and speed up the building process. We are looking forward to seeing new tenants occupying their flats soon,” concluded Lebelo.
