Unlocking fitness eKasi

"Gym should be your lifestyle, being fit is not a destination but a lifestyle."

The ‘Unlocked Fitness Sweat Camp’ was held at the Fiat Sports Ground in Meadowlands Zone Nine on August 26.

It is a monthly event which takes place every last weekend of the month and has seen the numbers of participants swelling since its introduction to the community.

The event started in June and this is the fourth session being held with Mulalo Mbulaheni being the instructor of the day.

Yoga instructor Mbali Mthithala.

The event was organized by Mondli Dube and Jack Mthethwa who saw the need to bring fitness into the community because it is not only about gym but about living a healthy lifestyle.

Mondli Dube studied sports management in Randburg and he decided to apply what he learnt within the community.

“Being from the community, I have been observing one thing I know that gym is not for obsessed people but a lifestyle that we all can maintain.

“The first event was attended by ten people and with time the numbers grew to 12 and we have recently partnered with Virgin Active Maponya. We should not only look at it as sports but also as entertainment,” said Dube.

Sthembiso Mcunu (23) is a newcomer to this event and he enjoyed taking part in every workout sessions from squats and jogging to yoga.

“What I most enjoy is doing the hard parts. Squats challenge your lower body and I am willing to come back as I am a gym fanatic,” said Mcunu.

“The first time I came here I was representing my company Future RitsaSA, the response was great, but we need to be more patient with the women and not rush them.

“Gym should be your lifestyle, being fit is not a destination but a lifestyle. You can also workout when you get home-even after work.

“Don’t stop exercising, also do it when you are at home so you can be healthy minded especially since our parents are people who are diabetic and suffer from high blood pressure,” said Mbulaheni.

All ages are welcome to join, be it older people, the youth and young children.
