Opportunities were presented to seven thousand five hundred tourism learners from across Johannesburg last week. these learners attended a two-day career expo Orlando Communal.

The career expo was organised by Asakhe Events and sponsored by Gauteng Economic Development.

Forty-six stalls were set up by institutions of higher learning and other stakeholders to provide learners with information about further study and funding.

Founder of Asakhe, Tshepang Luchaba said her company is divided into two parts which include site and career exhibition.

“I am also a member of Siya which is a career information association that includes all the universities, Further Education and Training (FET) and all international universities,” said Luchaba.

Luchaba said she organises different career expos depending on what the client in the different field want.

“We approached economic development about the career expo that we were planning and they choose tourism. The aim is to reach learners that are within the tourism sector and to give them the overviews of which careers are readily available to them,” she said.

She explained that they hope that Grade 9, 10 and 11 learners would understand tourism better because they are so negative about it.

“The aim is to show them that the are many opportunities in tourism and you can also be your own boss,” explained Luchaba.
