Cooking their way to victory

White Star Super Maize Meal, Royco, and Move! Magazine joined forces to host this year’s Stokvel Cooking Challenge

“This is truly the greatest moment of our lives and we are more inspired than ever before to take our cooking to the next level. We are so grateful to White Star, Royco and Move! Magazine for the opportunity to showcase what we can do,” said Zamasomi Msomi-Dunga, from the Durban Ladies Stokvel Group.

White Star Super Maize MealRoyco, and Move! Magazine joined forces to host this year’s Stokvel Cooking Challenge which started in early May this year.

This was about getting some of the greatest cooks from around the country according to the sponsors in the hopes to win a R40 000 cash prize.

The finals were hosted at Waltloo’s Big Save in Pretoria, where the top four namely:

• East London – Snako Stokvel Group

• KwaZulu-Natal – Durban Ladies Stokvel Group

• Nelspruit – Ladies Proverb

• Gauteng – Itemoheng Stokvel Group

They prepared their best traditional gourmet recipes for judges, but the Durban Ladies Stokvel Group won the money with their advanced cooking skills.

“We offer our congratulations to the Durban Stokvel group for their victory.

“Their amazing culinary skills impressed us from the very beginning of the competition and we are truly proud of their achievements.

“We are passionate about preparing nutritious meals for our families that contribute positively to their health and well-being. The Stokvel Cooking Challenge 2017 provides us with a shining example of how this can be achieved.

“Their ability to work together as a team, along with their unique approach to creating delicious flavours certainly gave the members of the Durban Stokvel group their competitive advantage,” said Mokhele Makhothi, White Star Marketing Manager.

The judging panel included celebrity, Chef Muzi from Royco and 2014 MasterChef finalist, Siphokazi Mdlankomo who couldn’t resist the fried pap and cheese and tuna filling recipe.

“Stokvels and their ability to prepare delicious meals are at the heart of our communities in South Africa.

“The dishes that I was privileged enough to taste at the Stokvel Cooking Challenge 2017 were of outstanding quality and served as a reminder that, through hearty and wholesome food, we truly can bring people together,” said Mdlankomo.
