Clubs battle it out in a game of cricket

Glenvista Cricket Club played against Johannesburg Protea Cricket Club in a friendly match on Sunday.

The friendly match took place at the cricket grounds in Riverlea which is the home grounds of the Riverlea Cricket Club and Thames Football Club.

According to the Glenvista captain Yaseen Muhammad, the game was only a warm up before the season starts in the first week of October and ends in April next year.

In the previous season, Glenvista finished off in third place in the league.

There are about 16 clubs in the cricket league and each team plays 16 games for the season and then the clubs play each other twice.

In cricket, there are different teams, the same way in any other sports such the first and second team and so on. Muhammad explained that the league has the Premium, President, Sunday 1 (SU 1), SU 2, SU3, SU4, SU5, and Saturday 1 (SA1), SA2, SA3 and SA4 teams.

The teams who fall under Sunday 1 through 5 and Saturday 1through 3 are the ones who only play on those specific days.

In Sunday’s match, Glenvista was chasing 244 runs in 30 overs, they only had about two hours left when the team had 90 runs after 10 overs.

Johannesburg Proteas lost 5 wickets in no time. “They had 44/5 after 10 overs. Their two batsmen had a great partnership of 150 runs.

“One of the batsmen scored 93 runs and sailed the ship. They won by 2 wickets in the last over of the game. “It was a nail-biting finish,” said Muhammad.
