Optometrist making a spectacle of things

October is Eye Awareness Month

As a reminder to protect your eyes, October has been declared Eye Awareness Month. Most eye injuries occur at home or during work, sports, and other activities.

Cataracts and infections like river blindness are one of the most common causes of avoidable blindness and visual impairment.

Effective action plans include the SAFE strategy, which is an acronym for the Surgery, Antibiotics, Face-washing, and Environmental hygiene strategy.

Sight and vision preservation is so important, the team at Nice Eyes Optometrist (NEO), an optometrist based at the Crystal Mall in Extension Six, are at it again by bringing back the second eye awareness competition in the history of Eldorado Park.

NEO, EldosFM, and Independent Optical Laboratory are working together to change the lives of five children and five pensioners.

Maya Laxmidas believes that everyone should be able to see properly.

How are they going to do this? Well, all you need to do is send a voice note via WhatsApp between 12 pm and 1 pm on Maak ‘n Plan with Bevelyn Makue.

The competition has already begun on August 23 but it is not too late to enter, as the competition ends at the end of September.

The competition is aimed at helping the needy; those who have a genuine need for spectacles and who cannot afford it. The WhatsApp voice note must specify why exactly the person feels that they should be the winners of the competition.

No SMSes will be accepted and the voice note should be sent by the person entering the competition.

If selected, the person will need to answer a question when they receive a call as well as providing proof of income and a utility bill. So, what’s up for grabs?

Winners can score themselves a free comprehensive eye test as well as a pair of single vision spectacles in a stylish frame.

Winners will be chosen and notified in October and the eye test will also be done in October as it is Eye Awareness Month.

The competition is open to all in Eldorado Park and surrounding areas. For more information, contact Maya Laxmidas on 011 342 2482.
