A good hair day for Westbury residents

The salon has been a long-time dream but it's also job creation not just for herself but for other people in the community

Saturday mornings call for a good hair salon and some real girl talk. This past Saturday Carol’s Hair Salon offered free wash, cuts, blow, curls and braiding to the Westbury community.

The six stylists were on their feet working from 8 am, busy with clients who queued outside for their free hair treatments. Carol’s Hair Salon has only been open for four weeks now but they are almost never short of clients.

“It’s Women’s Month and I really wanted to open my salon by giving. When you give, you actually open ways for yourself.

From this morning, I think we’ve already done thirty ladies and there are about 40 more women and children queuing outside. It’s all free today,” said owner Carol Sallie.

A decent blow is important to any woman.

The business is a salon and a barber in one and although its Women’s Month, Sallie and her staff offered their free services to men too.

“For me, Women’s Month is not only for ladies but you must also give back to your man as well because they also play an important role,” added Sallie.

“Cornrows, cuts for boys, hot tongs for curling, and a wash, cut and blow were the packages on offer. Everything came out of Sallies own pocket, including the hot dogs and cold drinks.

“Doreen Jentison, a client said, “I came for a blow and curl today and now I’m going to get dressed for a wedding. The service was very nice, relaxing and I enjoyed it.”

“This morning when I was standing on my stoep I said, ‘Lord, I’m not doing this thing to be seen’. God really does take me out of things. I was in prison for three years, I was wrongly accused of five attempted murders and arson.

A wash before the cut and blow.

“I faced a very big case and God took me out of prison. I didn’t do the crime but I actually went to prison to learn, I came out a better person. I came out a stronger woman,” said Sallie.

Sallie was released from prison in 2010 and has been working towards building her salon since then.

According to Sallie, the salon has been a long-time dream but it’s also job creation not just for herself but for other people in the community as well, as she has many youngsters working for her.

“We do braids and we make our own wigs as well, we do everything basically. Most of the salons in Westbury are not doing the things that we offer,” said Sallie.
