Entrepreneurship made fun for Grade Seven learners

Teaching the young entrepreneurship skills

With the rise of unemployment in the community, Riverlea Primary School held an Entrepreneurs Day for the Grade Sevens so that they could learn the trade of business.

Economic and Management Sciences teacher, Kenneth Trompetter explained that the school was trying to create entrepreneurs because there is no work in South Africa.

The government is encouraging people to go on their own, especially for children who don’t do well in school, they need to find ways to make money and in the cheapest way possible.

“The whole lesson is how to run your business, starting from an entrepreneur, you start with nothing and like I’ve explained to the children, if you take any of the old black millionaires, you’ll see that they started off with nothing.

“So, the idea is also to teach them about the terms, profit, loss, expenditure and the market,” said Trompetter.

The 140 Grade Seven learners were divided into groups of four where they planned, conducted market research and executed their plans.

Trompetter added, “We also encouraged students to make use of recyclable materials so that they could make 100 percent profit. You can make everything, like the wire cars, you can make a beautiful structure out of cardboard from the dustbin and you come sell it here. It’s art, people will buy it and your expenses are zero”.

Learners were given marks for their businesses and each had to pay R5 for the stalls. Proceeds from the event will be going towards buying cement so that they can pave a path leading to a ‘park and ride’ for the taxis and transport drivers.

A palisade fence was donated by Kwagga Holdings and has been erected last week. The 2017 Grade Seven are leading the project and the school will have to subsidize the rest of the amount.
