Mrs Leonora Starkey celebrates her 80th birthday

Mrs Starkey thanks you!

Mrs Leonora Starkey, the leading lady of the Yellow Roses Senior Club celebrated her 80th birthday party at Montgomery Park.

Her birthday was on August 2, but she celebrated it with style on August 5. A hundred people were invited to the celebrations and 32 of them were her very own club members.

“I danced myself out of my stick. See, I don’t even have the stick with me today,” said Starkey.

The mother of five dedicates her life to serving others and said since she was a little girl she used to run home from school and then immediately to the Old Age Home so that she could go to the shop for the old people and help with the general upkeep of their homes.

Starkey has been with the Yellow Roses for 19 years now after the club started out as a social club but later transitioned into an outreach programme.

She said,”I’m not doing this for people to honour me, I’m doing it because it’s my passion.”

“I was laying in bed and said, ‘My goodness, I don’t feel 80.’ ” You are only as old as you feel, I don’t know how old I feel but I feel like I can still take on the world,” she added.

She had a long list of thanks to the well-wishers who brought her all the gifts and said she was blessed to have such loving people in her life.
